Given that both platforms have made changes to their applications recently-Zoom to crack down on bad actors who disrupt meetings and Skype to make their product easier to use-we thought it’s a good time to see how they compare. Here’s what you need to know before your next meeting.

Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing tool. Created with large enterprises in mind, it allows users to host and record meetings, participate in group chats and collaborate as if they were in the same office. The app works with Windows, Mac, Android and iOS operating systems.

While both Skype and Zoom allow you to hold video chats and record them for later review, they differ significantly in scale. Skype can support up to 50 participants in a single video conference (the same limit applies to voice calls). Zoom can accommodate up to 1,000 video participants and 49 on-screen videos.

Another difference: Both Zoom and Skype allow users to join a meeting even if they don’t have an account; they can simply join via a shared link or code. But Skype recently upped the ante with a feature called Meet Now that has been heavily promoted during the coronavirus shutdown. Hosts can now create and share a free meeting even if they don’t have Skype software downloaded on their machine. The process is done through a Skype web interface and requires only a few clicks.

Advantages of Zoom

Before Zoom became so popular, Skype was one of the most widely used video conferencing applications. Out of nowhere, Zoom became the king of video conferencing, despite the popularity of Skype.

When it comes to video quality, Zoom offers 1080p resolution. However, you will have to enable it yourself, as it is not activated by default. Other than that, calls will be in 720p. With Zoom, you will need a 3 Mbps Connection for HD Calls, which is higher than what Skype requires.

Unlike Zoom, Skype does not force you to enable 1080p resolution for your calls. Also, Skype is not as demanding as Zoom when it comes to connection. While Zoom requires you to have 3 Mbps, Skype only needs 1.2 Mbps.

If your meetings don’t typically have more than 50 people, then you’re fine with a free Skype account. Like Zoom, Skype also allows you to initiate a call through your browser without having to sign in if you don’t want to.
