“I think my mother is more likely to be infected by the virus,” she said. “Going back to class would put my mother at risk, and that would scare me. So that’s the reason I got the booster shot: to keep my family safe.”

But Troy LaRaviere, president of the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, said in a virtual briefing Wednesday that an estimated 36,500 students were absent out of 107,000 enrolled in the 225 schools whose administrators responded to the survey-a 34% absence rate.

But principals have to go to schools whether or not there are classes, LaRaviere said, “So if you have principals who say buildings need to be closed and something needs to be addressed … they need to put aside their talking points and really listen and hear what they’re trying to tell them.”
