From the mid-1920s until shortly before his death, O’Higgins produced an extensive body of graphic work that, together with his easel and mural paintings, made him one of the most important artists of twentieth-century Mexico.

He was born on March 1 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. He was the second son of Alice McAfee and Edward V. Higgins. “My father was a liberal man, a lawyer, who at various times was a judge. He had to travel. I was born there because of circumstances.”(1)

He painted three murals at the Emiliano Zapata School in Mexico City, with the themes Los sopladores de vidrio (or La explotación del trabajo infantil en las fábricas), Los explotados contra los explotadores and La rebelión contra la dominación del clero católico.

He was a founding member, together with Leopoldo Méndez, Fermín and Silvestre Revueltas, Juan de la Cabada and José Mancisidor, among others, of the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (LEAR), which placed him in another perspective to look at national and international problems head on, as well as the possibility of affirming his position against fascism, war and imperialism, which were the objectives of that group. He collaborated with illustrations for the magazine Frente a Frente, LEAR’s press organ.

“It’s incredible. I think it’s one of the definitive No Doubt songs, especially because of the lyrics. It’s a true Gwen song and it encapsulates everything that she was living and going through at the time. Those are the ones that people really relate to, because she’s so honest and sincere in her lyrics. It’s another great and definitive lyric from Gwen, wanting that ‘simple kind of life’.”[1][1

“Sophie Muller is one of my most talented friends. She is driven by creativity and love for what she does, and as a result she never compromises. I consider her a true artist. I was a fan of Sophie’s work before I ever imagined working with her. She has a very remarkable style and a taste that drew me in. I think she has a gift of being able to bring out the emotion, style and personality of the artist.” -Gwen Stefani commenting on the work of “Simple Kind of Life” music video director Sophie Muller[49].

“Things change all the time – in my head and on set. I usually react to what I see, rather than having the artists react to what I’ve written down on paper. With every video, I always try to do something I didn’t do before. Most people can’t pinpoint what I do, because I don’t have “a style”. It would bore me to death to create the same style over and over again, and I need to go into it not knowing what will happen. Making videos is really exciting and creative, but if I always knew what I was going to do, it wouldn’t be interesting to me anymore.”[49] I’d be bored to death to create the same style over and over again.”[49
